Glenn Turner smiles out from the dust jacket of his second book. The first was entitled My Way, thus enabling Turner to join the thousands who believe they have seen it through without exemption. But the achievement that prompted this second work meant that Turner joined an exclusive list, now numbering 25 players, who have scored a hundred first-class centuries. And unless the structure of cricket and its international calendar is radically changed, the list is closed.
The smile on the cover of Glenn Turner’s Century of Centuries is mantled by tiredness. And that is understandable, for 35-year-old Turner has just batted 342 minutes, faced 333 balls, hit 39 fours and two sixes and made 311 not out. Given the chance to score his hundredth century on a flat New Road pitch against Warwickshire, a county whose bowlers he had milked for ten previous centuries, he booked in for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. “Bet you can’t get 300 in a day,” whispered Dennis Amiss after watching Turner bat for half an hour. Oops.
