When Worcestershire start their home season against Kent on Friday, spectators at New Road will be hoping for plenty of action and entertainment – though perhaps a spectacle not quite as frenetic as when the teams met in the County Championship in 1960. Brian Halford reports.
On the morning of 15 June 1960, Worcestershire’s team, including young spinner Norman Gifford making his debut, began a County Championship match against Kent at Tunbridge Wells.
On the evening of 15 June 1960, Worcestershire’s team headed for home. Not because of the weather…the lovely Kent outground had not taken a drop of rain all day. It was just ‘game over.’ In a day. Kent 187 all out. Worcestershire 25 and 61. Funny old game. And had pitch inspectors existed in 1960, it’s fair to assume they would have been deployed.
