“Oh look, they’ve got a scorer’s exam. You could do that.” It doesn’t sound like the sort of comment that changes a life, does it? Perhaps only when she looked out from the scorebox at Lord’s during the 2019 World Cup Final did Worcestershire’s first-team scorer, Sue Drinkwater, realise the full significance of her dad’s suggestion.
Only when she saw thousands of faces turn and look at the scoreboard for which she was responsible during the closing stages of that final and then during its super overs might she have appreciated the road she had travelled since, aged ten or eleven, she had sat next to Prestbury’s official scorer and kept her own record of the game. “It was all pencil with dots between the numbers,” she recalled a couple of weeks back.
