No county coach worth his pay goes into a match aiming merely not to lose it; at least, none of them would admit to harbouring such a defensive objective. Yet Worcestershire’s players travelled to Southport having recently suffered wounding defeats, both of which featured second-innings batting collapses to totals under 120. So as they returned home on Monday evening, Alan Richardson and his staff might have felt a quiet sense of relief that a rot had been stopped.
Stopped in some comfort, too. The unbroken 97-run stand between Brett D’Oliveira and Matthew Waite offered a few hundred spectators the most composed batting of the match at Southport. The pair had come together with their side on 114 for five halfway through the fourth afternoon and still some way from safety having conceded an 11-run first innings lead. D’Oliveira and Waite then removed Lancashire’s chances of victory as quietly as an efficient teacher removes a pair of scissors from an excitable child.
