Alan Richardson admits that it was “very disappointing” that Worcestershire’s first overseas pre-season trip for seven years had to be cancelled this month.
The Pears were forced to pull out of their planned visit to Oman due to the conflict in the Middle East. Instead of warm air and sun on their backs, Worcestershire’s players will be tasting the chiller climes of Kidderminster over the coming days, but head coach Richardson has hailed a typically positive response from his squad.
“It was disappointing because, as a group, we haven’t been away on a tour since 2019,” he said.
“We were due to go to Abu Dhabi in 2020 but Covid hit and since then we have not been in a position to budget for an overseas tour. It would have been a really nice to go to Oman and get the whole group together, the facilities looked amazing, and the club worked incredibly hard to be able to finance the trip. Ashley Giles and Joe Tromans did brilliantly to create that opportunity for the players, so to have it taken away from us was very disappointing. But typical of the group, there no, ‘woe is me.’ There was just a lot of dusting down and ‘right, what do we do next?’”
